Hands on Care – volunteers help with the every day running of the rescue. This includes weighing hedgehogs, refreshing food and water bowls and cleaning out hutches

Hand Feeding – sometimes hedgehogs who are unable to eat by themselves will be hand fed via syringe by our trained volunteers until they are well enough to eat by themselves

Medicating – hedgehogs can require a variety of medication while in rescue, volunteers help to administer this in the appropriate manner and dosage 

Foster Care – sometimes hedgehogs that are well enough to leave the critical care unit of the rescue but require further support before release will be cared for by one of our foster carers. Foster carers look after the hedgehog in an appropriate place in their home, garage or shed until they are ready for release

Faecal Sampling – hedgehogs often come into the rescue with a high parasite burden, leading to illness or even death. To monitor the progress of treatment, we regularly inspect faecal matter under a microscope to ensure that the burden is reducing

Transport – sometimes when someone finds a hedgehog in need of care, they are unable to transport it to us. We have a widespread network of hedgehog ‘ambulance drivers’ ready to safely transport hedgehogs to receive treatment as quickly as possible. Drivers may also help to transport hedgehogs from the rescue to the vets and back

Fundraising – we often organise for volunteers to run stalls at fetes and markets both for fundraising and awareness. Volunteers have also undertaken challenges like the Kilt Walk to support the rescue

Garden Space – we are always looking for people willing to volunteer secure garden space. This allows us to assess whether a hedgehog is ready for release by monitoring their behaviour in a safe but natural environment

We offer comprehensive training to all volunteers to support them in any tasks they are willing to help with. Some volunteers are trained to help with many of the tasks required to run the rescue while others prefer to stick to one or two – all time volunteered to us is highly appreciated, no matter how much!
